Text vs Subtext

Text:

In this clip, Valerie Plame is meeting with a member of the CIA who expresses to her how much he appreciates her silence and warns her that her husband has no chance against the White House.

Subtext:

The subtext within this clip is that the CIA wants to keep everything as quiet as possible. They wanted to keep Valerie and her husband quiet and were willing to do anything they could to discredit either of their voices.

Text:

In this clip Valerie is talking to her husband about what she went through when she was training to become a CIA agent. She talks about how they tried to get everyone to break and reveal someone's name, but that she didn't break. She didn't have a breaking point.

Subtext:

The subtext in this clip is that Valerie loved her job and that she was great at what she did. She wasn't just a secretary, she was a skilled agent.

Text:

Within this clip the CIA is in a meeting with a man named J. Turner who flew to Vienna to visit with IAEA scientists. Mr. Turner is discussing his report and talking about tubes he has examined. He is trying to tell everyone in the CIA that he is an expert and none of the people there had even seen the tubes. That is when Valerie chimes in to tell him that she, in fact, had seen the tubes because she led the covert team that intercepted the tubes in Jordan and brought back samples and delivered them to where Mr. Turner works.

Subtext:

There is quite a bit of subtext behind this clip. It is showing how involved and important Valerie's role was with the CIA. There is a room full of CIA agents and no one else can argue with Mr. Turner about the tubes besides Valerie. She is the only agent in the room to have seen the tubes and led the team who delivered them to Mr. Turner. This clip is really trying to emphasize that Valerie was not just a secretary as many claimed after the Plamegate scandal.

Text:

In this clip Joe and Valerie are out with their friends to dinner. Their friends begin to discuss issues and gossip about what is going on within the economy and begin to discuss bigger issues they heard on the news. Joe and Valerie play dumb for most of the conversation and don't offer their professional input because they have to be careful what they say due to Valerie's job. One of the men at the table asks Joe what he would do if he got on a plane and saw men with turbans. Joe begins to answer his question and then the scene cuts to the car where there is obviously an argument going on between Joe and Valerie.

Subtext:

Within this clip the director was trying to show how hard it would be for someone who knew so much about what was going on within the world to stay quiet when other people are gossiping. It shows the strength that Valerie has to keep quiet and proves how much she values the secrecy behind her career. It also is an eye-opener into the marital strife that Valerie's position as a covert agent puts on her marriage with Joe. This is the first scene that viewers see their marriage suffer even the slightest bit from the secret lives they have.

Text:

In this scene Joe just left an extremely stressful situation in which he was called all sorts of names by a reporter in public. He is trying to escape the chaos and gets into the taxi. The taxi driver knows him and tries to talk to him, but Joe doesn't want to talk or to be recognized. He tells the taxi driver to pull over and that he will just walk home. The driver pulls over and the camera pans to show us that Joe was dropped off right in front of the Capitol.

Subtext:

The meaning behind this clip is to show who is responsible for all of the chaos happening in Joe's life. We as a team believe the symbolism behind this scene is to show that no matter what he does, Joe feels like he cannot escape the Capitol and the government.
